Just a few weeks after winning the World Cup, its man of the tournament - Yuvraj Singh - was diagnosed with 'lung cancer'. Oncologists say if it's detected early, the tumours turn out to be non-life threatening in about 60% of cases.

"At his (Yuvraj's age) or someone less than 40 years, it's highly possible to have a lung tumour. But it will be non-cancerous if the person is not addicted to tobacco products and is a non-smoker. A lung tumour can be cancerous only if the person is a tobacco addict," said Dr Neelesh Reddy, consultant oncologist, Columbia-Asia Hospital.

"He was coughing and vomiting all through the tournament. But we thought it was just the stress, and his desire to excel on the biggest stage... so we ignored it," his mother Shabnam Singh told TOI in an exclusive chat. "Sometimes, pneumonia or tuberculosis or even a bad cough can lead to such non-cancerous tumours. In very rare cases, if a food particle has some fungus or is infectious, it can grow inside the lung tissue and can surface as a benign tumor," said Dr Jagannath Dixit, consultant, surgical oncologist, HCG Cancer Hospital.

Yuvraj Singh, a known fighter, was indignant though. "I didn't believe the reports," he said. "I felt fine, and deep inside, I felt good too," he said, almost embarrassed to go into the painful details.Patients diagnosed with benign tumour have an option to remove it surgically or it can be cured with medication. "Surgery is suggested only if the tumour is growing and if it gets infectious and causes complications in the system. Most often such a tumour doesn't cause too many problems and is cured with medication," said Dr Tiyas Sen, consultant oncologist, Shaw Majumdar Cancer Hospital.
