Wanda Sykes cancer: Sykes announced that she had been diagnosed earlier in the year with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Although DCIS is a non-invasive "stage zero breast cancer", Sykes had elected to have a bilateral mastectomy in order to remove her chances of ever getting cancer. Comedienne Wanda Sykes opened up on “The Ellen DeGeneres” show yesterday about her battle with breast cancer. “I had breast cancer…I know, it’s scary,” Sykes said with a short chuckle.

Wanda Sykes was married to record producer Dave Hall from 1991 to 1998. In November 2008, she publicly came out as lesbian while at a same-sex marriage rally in Las Vegas regarding Proposition 8, which forbids new marriages of same-sex couples in California. Wanda Sykes began her stand-up career at a Coors Light Super Talent Showcase in Washington, DC, where she performed for the first time in front of a live audience in 1987. Sykes' third comedy special, Wanda Sykes: I'ma Be Me premiered on HBO in October 2009. November 2009 saw the premier of The Wanda Sykes Show, which starts with a monologue and continues with a panel discussion in a similar format to Bill Maher's shows Real Time with Bill Maher and Politically Incorrect.
Wanda Sykes Cancer: She tells Ellen that her original intention was to go in for breast reduction surgery and when routine pathology tests were done on the tissue removed during breast reduction surgery, cancer was found. “I was very, very lucky because DCIS is basically stage zero cancer. But cancer is cancer. I had the choice of, you can go back every three months and get it checked. Have a mammogram, MRI every three months just to see what it’s doing. But I’m not good at keeping on top of stuff. I’m sure I’m overdue for an oil change and a teeth cleaning already. I have a lot of breast cancer history on my mother’s side of the family, which I didn’t know about.“
